For the Batter:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup plain yogurt
  • 1 cup boiling water

For the Moist Topping:

  • 1 cup chopped semi-sweet chocolate
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream


  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat the oven to 180°C. Grease and flour a round cake pan, approximately 23 cm in diameter.
  2. Prepare the Batter:
    • In a large bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
    • In a stand mixer, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth.
    • Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add the vanilla extract and mix.
    • Incorporate the dry ingredients into the butter mixture alternately with the yogurt, starting and ending with the dry ingredients.
    • Mix well and finally add the boiling water, stirring until the batter is smooth.
  3. Bake the Cake:
    • Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for approximately 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
    • Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
  4. Prepare the Moist Topping:
    • In a small saucepan, heat the heavy cream until it begins to bubble around the edges.
    • Pour the hot cream over the chopped semi-sweet chocolate and stir until you achieve a smooth ganache.
  5. Assembly:
    • Place the cake on a serving plate.
    • Pour the chocolate topping over the cake, spreading it evenly.
  6. Serve:
    • Allow the topping to set slightly before cutting and serving. Optionally, decorate with chocolate shavings.
